History of UI
Today for my History of Higher Education course, we had to prepare a brief history on our undergraduate institution. I thought I'd share a few quick things.
In the 1860's, Lewiston was the capital of the state. In the late 1860's, Boise stole the claim of capital. This really pissed off the residents of North Idaho. How pissed were they? Well, they were going to leave the state. A bill to separate North Idaho from Southern Idaho and become part of Washington had made its way all the way through both houses of congress. Although President Grover Cleveland decided to pocket veto it, the two north and south were still mad at each other. In 1889, when the territorial legislature decided to establish a state institution, they decided on Moscow to "appease" the angered residents of Northern Idaho.
Also, the first women's athletic team at the University of Idaho, was the rifle team.
